Min Raises Preflop

In most any lower limit poker online room, there’s likely at least one seated at your tablethe guy who every time it gets to him and he wants to raise, he just doubles the big blind.

It’s a confusing proposition, as in general raising the minimum isn’t going to do much more than build a pot where people are getting odds to call you no matter what they hold. It’s funny, then, that these poker players are the same ones complaining about getting sucked out when their AA gets cracked by 7 10 or 5 6 or any other small card combination that only got into the pot because it wasn’t raised correctly.

Min raises executed out of the blue by someone who normally raises a regular 3x to 4x the big blind can often be a warning flag for a big hand. Some poker opponents, on picking up big pairs, want to raise but also want to make sure they get some action, and therefore raise just enough to bring some others along. Doing this is, again, pretty much asking to get out flopped, but can also, in the right circumstances, lead to an opponent thinking you are weak, and come after you.
