if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified

toward Gods word. Instead of looking for the cure, mankind is
trying to spread it to all around. Corruption is cancer,
homosexuality is cancer, theft, prostitution, false doctrine,
robbery, rape, lies, drunkenness, drug abuse, pride, child
abuse, in deference, unbelief, all of these and more are
symptoms of a cancer, eating away at the very fabric of mankind.

How do you choose a name? Do you put down the first name that pops into your mind? Initially that’s what I used to do, until someone pointed out to me that there are a few things to take into consideration when choosing a name…

1.You Have To Be Comfortable With It

We associate names with people we know. If you like a certain name but know and dislike a person who bears it, will you feel comfortable using that name in your story?

Will you mentally shut that person out or will you be reminded of them each time you type that name?

Our characters have to be likable to us before they can become likeable to our readers. Will your dislike for that person transfer to your character?

2.It Must Be Easy To Pronounce

The English language can be, at times, misleading. How many words, and even names we spell one way and pronounce another? If the name you have chosen falls into this category, will your readers know how to pronounce it?

For years I use to pronounce the beautiful name ‘Sean’ exactly how it’s written ‘Seen,’ when it’s pronounced by the much nicer sounding ‘Shorn.’ Will the name you choose bear the same problem?

If you choose a difficult pronouncing name for your character and worse, one that’s not widely known, you stand to lose the effect of that name. A beautiful sounding name can be utterly destroyed if your reader doesn’t know how to pronounce it.

Your story has to flow. If the name you’ve chosen is not easy to pronounce, the readers will constantly stop each time they come across it. This will disrupt the flow of your story.

3.Foreign Sounding Names

The same as the above applies to foreign sounding names. They must be easy to pronounce. Consider the following:

Yahiya Indihar Gschu Lyudmila

These names sound exotic but they don’t exactly roll off the tongue. Should you compromise the flow of the story for the sake of a name?

4.Does The Name Suit Your Character?

Not all names suit all people and not all names will suit all characters. Like clothing and hairstyles, names go out of fashion too.

For example…

Let’s say your heroine is a lively, upbeat, modern lady. Will it suit her type of personality if we choose the name ‘Mabel’? ‘Mabel’ we usually associate with an elderly aunt or grandmother.

What about your hero? Let’s say he’s a young man who possesses a powerful personality. Will the name ‘Hubert?’ suit him? ‘Hubert’ would suit an elderly character or perhaps a ‘quiet’ character.

5.They Shouldn’t Start With The Same Letter

If you’re going to have two main characters in your story and their names start with the same letter, it will read a little awkwardly.

Example…

David and Debra Sam and Sue George and Gina

6.Surnames

Like we carefully choose the first name for our characters, we have to be careful when selecting their surnames. Just like first names, there are certain surnames, which sound better than others.

When selecting a surname, make sure it has a pleasant ring, when used with the first name. Using names, which rhyme like, Jeff Jefferson, sound amusing. If this is the effect you wish to create then using it is fine.

7.Stereotype Names

Are you thinking of naming your character Adolph or Judas? There’s nothing wrong with these names, except for the fact that we tend to associate them with that single person in history who bore them. Will your reader trust your hero if you name him Judas?

8.Famous Names

I recall a quote I once read which went something like this…

“Nothing grows under the shade of a tree.”

If you name your character Elvis, Madonna etc.. Will your character be able to outshine the ultra famous person of whom the world knows? I doubt it.

When naming characters there are also a few other points to consider…

Naming them will not only depend on what kind of people they are, but who their parents or guardians were (if the parents or guardians play some sort of role in your story). After all, we don’t name ourselves, do we? So take into consideration the following…

1)What kind of people are the parents?

a)Free spirited?

Unusual names will rank highly amongst people like this.

For example,

The seasons of the year Or perhaps a month in the year Or an object Etc

b)Conservative?

These types of people tend to use the full name rather than an abbreviated version of it.

For example,

Kathleen instead of Kat Michael instead of Mike Etc

2)What Is The Parents/Guardians Nationality?

If they’re traditional, they will choose a name, which is popular in their country. Also traditional parents/guardians tend to give their children the names of their own parents or other relatives.

Look at the name you chose for your main characters. Does the name suit them?

If you write for a living, you deal with deadlines. Sometimes you will have several jobs on your plate at the same time.

On top of that, your clients or editors don’t coordinate their demands, so you might even have two or three deadlines all falling within the same day or two.

It happens.

And being the professional you are, if you think you can do the work well in the time provided, you’ll tell each of them there’s no problem meeting the deadline. After all, you don’t want to let them down by declining the job. Nor do you wan to lose the income.

And when all goes well, you manage to organize your time to get each of the jobs written and delivered on time.

>> But what happens when things go badly?

What happens when one of your clients is three days late in delivering some of the necessary briefing information? What happens when one of them rings up and needs the work a day sooner, throwing all of your careful scheduling out of the window?

If you have a good relationship with your clients, you can usually work something out.

But still, there are times when everything conspires against you and it begins to feel like the task ahead is impossible.

And it may not be a client’s fault at all. Maybe you have a burst water pipe to deal with at home. Maybe the kids are all off school for a day or two. Maybe you have a day or two or three when you feel sick.

>> Then the panic sets in.

Have you experienced this? The writer’s panic attack? The sense that the task ahead is impossible and you’ll never get everything done?

You feel it creeping up on you slowly. And then the real sense of panic sets in, and it makes everything a whole lot worse…because you freeze.

The sense of panic starts to take up all the space in your head. You can feel your back tightening. You’re staring at the screen and you just can’t write any more…because you are consumed by the knowledge that everything is coming unstuck…you won’t meet the deadlines…you’ll let down your clients…you won’t get your pay check.

Step one is the hardest. You have to get up and walk away.

Do anything. Take a walk. Go to a movie. Go visit some friends. Read a book. Take a snooze. For how long? That depends…but as a guideline, I would give yourself a good couple of hours.

Two hours? At this point the little voice in your head is saying, “Sure, brilliant idea. We’re faced with this impossible set of deadlines and you think I should go watch a movie?”

Yes, I do. The longer you sit in front of the screen, the deeper the panic becomes and, at best, you’ll move ahead at a snail’s pace for the rest of the day. Worse still, your work probably won’t be of a very good quality.

Far better to make a clean break and walk away. And walk right away. Get out of the room. Out of the house if you can. Cut yourself off from work completely. Don’t compromise and decide to read through the client brief again until you get your head straight. Make a clean break.

When it comes to taking that break, many writers have already found out what works best for them.

Some will go running or spend an hour at the gym. Some will do some stretching exercises, or yoga, or breathing exercises. And yes, others will just go out for a beer or watch a movie.

All of these activities achieve the same end. They change the focus of your mind. They prevent that panic from feeding on your insecurities and fears.

If you have been writing for a few years and have faced your fair share of deadlines, you probably already know what works best for you in these circumstances.

If you’re relatively new to writing to deadlines, and have faced a panic attack or two, my two messages are:

1. You’re not alone. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad writer or a bad scheduler. It happens to the best of us.

2. Step away from the computer. Whatever you choose to do, make sure it is something completely unrelated to the work you are doing.

When you sit back down, with that sense of panic behind you, the speed with which you work will more than compensate for the time lost when you stepped away.

Long gone are the days when white, cream, gold and silver were the only available colours to the happy couple for their wedding day. Over the last ten years, we’ve seen even the most traditional style weddings start to incorporate a little colour outside of the standard choices. These days, it’s unusual to go to a wedding where there isn’t a little extra colour to the proceedings!

However, for the couple who want everything to match, here are 5 ways to stop it all costing you a fortune!

1) Choose your colour scheme in the right order…starting with the most expensive items first.

2) Resist the temptation to commit straightaway to a particular colour until you’re sure you can carry it through without breaking the budget.

3) Talk to all your suppliers first before committing to a colour. By this, I mean the venue, the caterers, the people supplying your outfits, whoever is supplying your invitations and other wedding stationery, and your proposed florist.

4) Be a little flexible – variations on a colour theme can be very beautiful and a lot less of a headache than if you try to get everything absolutely perfectly matched (it’s probably impossible anyway unless you choose white, and even that comes in a variety of shades, believe it or not!!)

5) Be a little creative - if you can’t get favour boxes, for example, in exactly the colour you want, get them in a complementary colour instead and tie them with an appropriate ribbon colour. Or make little tags and print them in the right colour.

So – getting it in the right order… you should consider:

A) Your outfits, and those of your bridesmaids/ushers/pageboys/flowergirls etc

Depending on your outfit supplier, you may not even be able to match the boys to the girls if you choose an unusual colour for either. Check with your supplier about making waistcoats/cravats in the bridesmaids’ material, for example… but don’t book anything until you know you can match it to other things!

B) Your reception colour scheme

Something many brides don’t consider when choosing their colour scheme is the existing venue colours:

Don’t make the same mistake! If your reception is in a hotel or other ’static’ venue, often the basic colour scheme of the room is quite bland, but clashes are best avoided. Have a good think about what is going to work, and take into consideration the colour of the chair upholstery, the available tablecloth/linen napkin colours, and whether the hotel intends to supply menus or other table decorations. Have a good chat with your point of contact about what they are prepared to do for you on the day – some places will refuse to set out napkins other than their own, for example, and this is all best dealt with in advance!

If you’re having your reception in a marquee, talk to the supplier about a coloured lining if you don’t want white. Also, many caterers offer either only white or only ivory tablecloths, and standard chairs in white plastic, or burgundy and gilt, which can clash horribly. This is definitely something I would flag as a big headache for many brides when trying to plan the table decorations – make sure that you’ve asked to see the chairs the marquee company are proposing to supply, and have a chat with the caterers about your colour scheme before you even decide to book them. Like the hotels and venues mentioned in the point above, some caterers will refuse to set the table with anything that isn’t their standard issue, so make sure you understand what they include in the price they quote you – this is all best dealt with in advance!

There are companies that will hire out coloured table linen, but the colours can be limited and it gets quite pricey quite quickly (assume around £10 per tablecloth, and £2.50 per chair cover). Again – make sure your colour scheme is going to work with whatever they’re offering before you commit to either!!

C) The wedding stationery, and getting it to all match on the day!

Those fabulous peacock coloured invitations may look like just the thing, but pause for a second and think about this…
Do you want your colour scheme to carry through from the invitations to the day itself? and if so, can the same company supply you with everything? You’ll need some or all of the following that can be made from the same card/paper supplies:

Beforehand, you will need:

• save the date cards

• invitations
• wedding list details
• rsvp cards

  On the day you will need:

• orders of service
• table plan
• table numbers/names
• place cards

  you might also consider:

• menus
• favour boxes
• cake boxes
• confetti cones
• napkin rings
• favours

  afterwards, you’ll need:

• thank you cards

Now, obviously you don’t have to have everything matching, but in an ideal world, there should be consistency and you don’t want to be changing the colour scheme half way through because it’s proving too much of a nightmare!

D) The florist:

These days, you can more or less have any kind of flower at any time of year, but the price will vary widely with the month and the seasonality. If you want your blooms – your corsages, bouquet, church/registry office flowers and your table decorations to go with your scheme, have a good chat about what’s possible and how much you’ll need to spend BEFORE you commit to your final colour scheme…

And please remember, a little patience will go a very long way!!

Your article could wind up on hundreds or thousands of web sites. 7. Money. If people like your work, you could get hired to write articles for others. Good writers are in huge demand. 8. eBooks. You could compile your related articles and put out an eBook – either for free or charge for it. Adding your links to the eBook will provide additional advertising. 9. Trust. Since you will recognized as the subject matter expert, it will be easy for you to market related products on your web site. 10. eZines. You could contact other eZine publishers and do an article exchange. This will give you guaranteed visibility in another’s eZine giving you more credibility and even more visibility. 11. Money. Along with possibly getting paid for writing articles for others, you can make money by having fresh content on your web pages incorporated with an advertising system like Google’s AdSense.

It may seem kind of silly, but one of the biggest determinations to the success of a poker player in a Texas Holdem tournament is how many players he or she will face off against at each table. The reason for this is simple. The amount of players at a table of Texas Holdem will directly influence the game. If there are too many in the Texas Holdem game, the card pool is incredibly slim with chances of really good hands, and conversely poor hands, being rather slim. When there are too few people playing Texas Holdem at one time the chances of getting great poker hands are high, but so are the chances of getting really bad hands. For this reason most Texas Holdem tournaments work very hard to keep a certain number of people at each table.

While there is no official amount to how many players should be seated at a table for a game of Texas Holdem. There seems to be a comfortable feeling that between five and eight people makes a good set of odds. With less than five people you get far too many boom or bust hands, with more than eight people playing Texas Holdem seeing a hand do better than two pair can almost seem mythological. While there are and always will be exceptions to the odds, after all chaos is always present, one of the draws to Texas Holdem is how firm the odds of each player having a particular set up of cards will be. If this goes to far away, then one of the main draws of Texas Holdem goes with it, and thus the poker game becomes much less fun to play. So next time you find yourself getting ready for a Texas Holdem tournament, take time to count the players at the table. This will give you an idea of the odds you will be working with and might just give you an edge.
