Self Improvement Advice And Free Tips

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

I am sure that I am not alone in the fact that I have a large army of demons in my head. These demons are always talking to me and trying to advise me about how to react to different situations. For many years I listened and took their advice, these years were not exactly happy ones and I have now come to realise that these demons are not my friends but are actually my enemy.

I had many issues in my life that had a negative affect on my levels of self-esteem. The demons used these issues to get to me and to play their mind games. For this article, I am going to describe my stuttering demons and how I eventually destroyed them. The advice can be used for whatever type of demon you may have.

At the age of four, I developed a stutter which would continue to affect my speech for the next eighteen years of my life. I was aware of what I could and could not say and was also aware of the social situations in which I was more likely to stutter.

If I was asked a question by for example a friend, I would think of the answer but before I would have a chance to say it, a voice would appear. This voice or what I call my demons would advise me not to say that word and to substitute it for a different word.

If I was invited out to say a party, my demons would advise me not to go, as there would be a lot of people there that I did not know. They would remind me that I found it difficult talking to people which I did not know.

At one stage in my life, I decided that I wanted a career change as I was not happy in the role that I was in. My demons reminded me, that to find alternative employment meant going through the whole interview process again. They continued that I had always struggled to talk fluently at interviews, due to the pressure factor.

I would be able to speak quite well when I was drunk and this is when I would have the confidence to talk to the ladies. On several occasions a woman has given me their phone number and I would tell them that I would call them to arrange a night out. The next day though, when sober, the demons would remind me that making a phone call is what I find the hardest form of speech task and to simply not bother.

As previously stated, I used to listen to these demons and suffice it to say I did not go on my first date until I was eighteen years of age.

Things had to and were about to change. After reading many self-help books, I realised what I had been doing wrong. I should not be listening to these demons, in fact what I need to do is the opposite of what they tell me. Steve don’t go to that party, OK then I will. Steve don’t phone that lady up, OK I will, etc.

I am not trying to say that this is easy to do. I am happy to say that I have eradicated my speech demons and am now fluent, however I do still have demons in other areas of my life. There are not nearly as many as there have been in the past and I am slowly hopefully killing them all.

I treat it like a war. There are many battles and I have to say that I do not win them all. I talk to my demons all the time and especially when they win one of these type battles. I tell them that they may have won this particular battle but that I will win the overall war.

You may possibly think that I am a bit of a freak after reading this article. I frankly do not care, I am happier now than I have ever been.

Good luck in your quest to improve your own life.

Help – I Need Traffic To My Website

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

It’s no secret, the lifeblood of any website is the amount of traffic that consistently visits it on a daily basis. Generally speaking large amounts of traffic leads to an increase in sales and income. Poor traffic leads to disappointment and zero dollars in your pocket. This article outlines some simple techniques I use to drive traffic to my websites.

I have 4 primary methods that I use to drive traffic to my website. They include writing articles, link exchanges, pay-per-click advertising and classified ads. Some of the methods are free but require a little more elbow grease while other methods require less work but do require an initial investment of money in order to get them started.

The main method I use to attract traffic to my website is to write articles similar to the one you are reading. Based on my personal experiences this is the best way to encourage visitors to your website and I truly wish I had started using this method earlier. The beauty behind writing articles is the power it has to drastically improve your website both in terms of relevancy to the search engines and in visitors. For instance when I write an article I do so with the intent to encourage the reader of that article to visit my websites, this is benefit number 1. The second benefit occurs when other webmasters utilize that same article as content on their websites. This has the potential to send more visitors to your web page.

Finally the biggest advantage to writing articles comes from the automatic link-back to your website. Everyone knows the advantages a good link exchange program can provide to a website. When a Webmaster publishes one of my articles on their website they have to include my signature block. This block of information contains links to some of my websites – which is how I earn a one-way link exchange back to my websites. This method increases my website’s popularity with the search engine Google.

A good link exchange program is vital to the success of your website and can help attract visitors. Search engines such as Google use links back to your website as a means for determining the page rank of a website. This page rank is beneficial to a websites’ success and placement in the search engine directory.

Probably the easiest way to immediately send traffic to your website is through the use of pay-per-click search engines. Although there is a cost involved when using this method you are guaranteed to receive traffic that is truly interested in your product or service. This method can also be used to test new ideas to make sure they will be profitable before fully releasing them. Again remember no traffic is the same as no sales.

Classified ads allow you another opportunity to entice visitors to your website. The downside is that money is again forced to leave your possession before you actually make any sales. This method of traffic generation is similar to the PPC search engine technique described above.

As I mentioned earlier I use the four methods described above to generate visitors to my websites. Although these aren’t the only methods I use, they are the techniques that have worked best for me when it comes to generating qualified traffic and making a decent income online.

Exercise – More is NOT better!

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Years ago when I was a professional bodybuilder, I fell into the mindset that the more I exercised, the less fat I ate, the better I would look and feel. At the time this seemed like the logical thing to do. And maybe in my mind that was correct. However, from my bodies stand point, this was NOT the thing to do, nor was it healthy.

If you have exercised for any length of time, chances are you too have fallen into this mind trap. If I walk thirty minutes and burn three hundred calories, then I will walk an hour and burn twice as many. If I eat thirty grams of fat a day and lose two pounds, then I will eat ten grams a day and lose four pounds. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple.

While your mind might be able to take that, your body can not. You see this with a lot with people. Out of the blue they just hit a wall. Their bodies all of a sudden just say, “That’s it, I done- no more!” I believe exercising efficiently in less time will do more for you in the long run than trying to do more in the short run.

If you over exercise, your body gets to the point where it just goes through the motions. The only thing you are really doing is satisfying your brain. The muscles shut down, hit plateaus and ache. These are all signs of over doing it. They reality is, which will seem illogical is that the muscles grow and recuperate while they are resting, not during the workouts. This was very hard for me to understand until I worked out for a summer with Brian Silk Mr. Universe. Brian was lifting half the weight in half the time, performing half the exercising I was doing. Obviously I was doing something wrong.

He went on to explain to me just this. The hardest thing for me to do at that time was walk out of the gym when it seemed as though I was only through half my workout. One year later I won the Mr. Michigan Bodybuilding championships.

Here is my point: Making progress in your exercise program comes down to; working smart not hard, listening to your body, and understanding more exercise is bad for you in the long run. The magic is in this formula: Consistency + variety + efficiency = results!

  • DVD Player Software?

    Sunday, December 28th, 2008

When I first read this topic name I didn’t want to touch it with a ten foot pole! After all what the heck is dvd player software? My dvd player doesn’t have any place to put floppy disks or cd-ROMs and I have never seen that advertised in the store or on TV (And for me if it aint on TV it aint real). So I was about to write it off… … and then I remembered that sometimes I do watch DVDs on my laptop when I am on a trip or feel like watching a movie in bed and my laptop does have the capability to add software, so maybe this is something that I ought to look into because it might be real after all.

If you think about it the dvd player that you have is more of a computer than you may think and so every dvd player has dvd player software programmed onto it or it wouldn’t be able to read the digital material on the DVD and transform it into meaningful images and sounds. However this wouldn’t matter to us at all because we will never need and could never use new software for these dvd playersit is permanently with that player.

Computers on the other hand that have a dvd compatible drive also must have dvd software to play the dvd. The differences among these dvd player software packages has been most clear to me when I have plugged in a movie after a long day of work. I am ready for no more headaches and then the software that is programmed on the disk usually messes everything up. You see often they have some sort of autoplay so that the software that comes with the DVD will automatically start playing the movie. However this software has either never been very compatible with my computer or just sucks all the way around because it never works right.

I always have better results when I stop the integral dvd player software and use the software that I have either downloaded onto my computer or that came in the software package in the new computer. This DVD software usually performs as flawlessly as you would want after a long hard day on the job as a new and used video games salesman. Which makes me wonder, ” is there a software package for playing DVD’s that will make my movie watching experience better than flawless.” I will be searching and I will keep you posted.

Are Humans a Bunch of Morons?

    Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Are humans divine creatures endowed with the form of the creator? Or are humans like any other species on the Planet? Are humans as special as they make themselves out to be or do they have flaws like any other creature in the animal kingdom? Are Humans a Bunch of Morons so egocentric that they believe they, above all are beyond any other species?

From the outside looking in at the species one may feel that humans are hopeless indeed, perhaps bashing humans because they appear to all be a bunch of morons. Does this offend you human? Well, as for you personally well we are discussing this issue so perhaps you yourself may not be included in that grouping even if you are human. Maybe you are above the race, which so often sinks to the lowest common denominator when even something small is a miss? Rioting in the streets like there is no tomorrow.

Honestly now how many people do you actually know who have not surrendered their minds to the mass media hysteria, television and purported rhetoric? Unenlightened, wasteful, religious borderline cultish nut cases and blind to reality; how many people do you know who have already put their minds on a shelf and surrendered them.

With that said; would you say that the human species could use a little modification? Or would you say that we must remain human and pure, that God would not have wanted us to tinker with his creation, even though we find our species in decay, with IQ levels, falling in every civilization in the present period? Some find the argument against re-designing this species shallow at best. What if we could make ourselves smarter, more healthy and stronger thru advances in science? Should we? Do you believe that humans are currently de-evolving into a dummying down affect?

What if some wish to remain human and others wish to move forward and progress the species? Should fear of change hold us back, religious dogma or choosing not to choose, thus becoming a “no vote” for future technological advances? Can we perhaps divide the species and allow the choice. Unfortunately we know what happens when one group envies that of another, and if the species is divided by equal one will succeed the other, as that is a human trait too. Humans as they say are mostly harmless, but they can be a complete pain in the butt they way they carry on and one observing humans may come to a conclusion that yes they are a bunch of morons? Yet where do we go from here, as the time is coming near to make a decision on the matter. Think on this abstract thought for a moment.

    Own Willpower?

    Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Didn’t your father bug you about will power, and how it separated
the boys from the men, and if he was from the computer-age,
    the girls from the women?

After much research we admit to not discovering a definition for this willpower that was both consistent and conforming to 21st century science.

Today it is considered a myth by many, and like nostalgia for more innocent times, the more we examine it, the less we have.

Calvin Coolidge, 30th U.S. President said, – We all require pigheaded persistence-and-determination in the face of stubborn resistance and adversity. –
Willpower is defined as overcoming something or someone.

    How about overcoming us?

When one part of us wants to lose ten pounds of ugly fat, and the other part answers – Cut your head off!, and reaches for that shiny, delicious chocolate donut, we are getting closer to how willpower plays out.

    Descartes

Forget for a moment his Cogito ergo sum – I think therefore I am.

What he did in 1620-50 was create a trichotomy (dividing into three), Soul, Body and Mind, what was previously a dichotomy (two branches), just Soul and body. He’s responsible for the separation of mind from body.

Today, the cutting edge scientists never refer to Soul; they cannot find it with fMRIs. They refer to Bicameral Resonance – two governing parts of our brain.

Many have trouble pointing out (imaging), the half called Subconscious mind.
Psychological literature has no difficulty laughing at the anatomically invisible soul, yet they consistently refer to the – invisible – Subconscious as the seat of our emotions and behaviors.

Our conscious mind is easy to find, it is our Temporal, Frontal, Occipital and Parietal brain cortices. Cognitive skills are activated by our prefrontal cortex.

Your left-hemisphere runs logic, reasoning, math, language and music – including reading and writing, listening (comprehension), and communicating. Pretty heavy.

What about this? The average college graduate is absolutely convinced, (see: Gallup research), that we are sentient creatures that control our lives through conscious analysis followed by intelligently thought-out behaviors. It is that or we are criminals or demented. It is accepted we are left-hemispheric dominant folks.

    Subconscious

Everything in our lives from motivation, to decision-making, to behaviors, are permitted by our subconscious mind or inhibited. Counterintuitive to commonsense – it is not our all knowing, all powerful conscious mind that decides ourlifes’ decisions.

Healthy minds are led by our subconscious, with a nod to our fellow traveler with the big reputation. One more step – feelings follow imagery, meaning cause-and-effect is based on what consistently appears on the movie-screen of our subconscious mind.

If there is no agreement by both minds – there is no decision or satisfaction with our
conscious, logical, reasonable decision. Don’t laugh, but the heart has its reasons.

They call it Cognitive Dissonance – conflict between our thinking. Conscious mind
does have a veto power of half-a-second, but it is rarely exercised.

Stress and anxiety, even panic occur when logic and reason choose one path – romance is an outstanding example – and our emotions (heart), is a contrarian.

    Right-Brain

Consider using the term right-brain for Subconscious mind, and left-brain for
    the other half of mind.

Our right-brain specializes in looking at wholes (holistic), is intuitive,
subjective, random and synthesizing (combining, putting together). It accesses
feeling, searches for patterns, it run parallel-processing, and multi-tasks.

Righty is independent yet interdependent, and communicates with Lefty through
your corpus Callosum, Anterior and Hippocampal Commissures.

The most interesting reality about our right-brain is first, that it runs our lives,
and second, that it takes its goals and objectives from our conscious mind.

How and when we can consciously give order to righty is often the secret of
success in life. It is based on auto-suggestion, affirmations and meditation.

Consider this: both halves work together 100% of the time, but one half
is dominant. We live in a left-brained economy, (except during war), which values
thinking and doing – based on logic and reasoning. Engineering, computer programming and all forms of science are left-brained skills, while creativity and
imagination is best left to our right-brain.

During waking hours we operate in Beta cycles per second, and are left-brain dominant.
During twilight-snoozes and sleep-time our Delta (REM) cycles per second are
dominant. This is certainly not a partnership of equals – our left-brain is constantly
attempting to keep input from righty to a minimum.

It treats righty in an adversarial way, more like a child or wife of the 19th century.
Be still and be useful, and thankful you are permitted around. Perhaps that is the cause and effect of up to 26% of mental illness in the population – according the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

    Endwords

Proactive-Interactive-Reactive change occurs in us only when we inform and influence our Subconscious (Right-Brain), to permit it. Persistence and determination does not cut it. The law of Reversed Effort consistently reveals that
the harder we try (more willpower) – the worse the results. When will is in conflict with feeling, our willpower always loses.

Change occurs when our right-brain mental filters and censors are down; our right-brain is conservative and overprotective. Our conscious (left-brain) can initiate
new behaviors, but it must be by subtlety and indirectness.

Ask psychologists how easy it is to promote meaningful change in even the smallest way – for people who are spending hours weekly at it, at a cost of $350 an hour.

Yes, Virginia, change is possible – 5% of alcoholics improve – that is not a typo.
Dedicated folks stop smoking, and IQ can be raised up to 50%.

Motivation – feelings – habit-through-repetition are required to modify our existing behaviors.

The Arrogant Writer: Five Ways To Nurture and Defend Your Muse

    Friday, December 26th, 2008

Arrogance has a bad rap. We think of arrogant people as unpleasant to be around, full of themselves, and incapable of taking an interest in anyone else. However, when applied to one’s own writing, a certain measure of well-placed arrogance can be a useful tool.

Writing can be a scary enterprise. The writer puts herself out for public scrutiny in a way most other artists and professionals do not. When the writer publishes, she commits herself to the words she’s written for the rest of her life. Even if she changes her mind about what she’s said, others may still react to the piece decades after it first appears in print. This can make even the act of putting pen to paper (or more likely, fingers to keyboard) an anxiety-producing ordeal.

Then there is the schooling most of us received, which treated writing as a chore rewarded when well done or punished when poorly done, as opposed to a pleasurable activity for ourselves and our readers. Very few of us had any audience for any the writing we did in classrooms, other than the teachers who instructed, criticized and graded us. It’s no wonder most writers suffer from self-doubt rather than overconfidence. We tend to underestimate ourselves and our words, even when they come from the most powerful places inside us, even when we get accolades from the outside world, and even long after we finally get published.

Practicing selective arrogance can help disarm these nasty doubts. And, not to worry: If you are not arrogant to begin with, practicing the type of arrogance I suggest will not transform you into an insufferable braggart. Rather, it will help uplift you from the gutters of self-doubt onto the clean, dry road to getting published. Even if you do not feel in the least arrogant about your writing, you can still follow my simple instructions to act as if you do, with the same results: to get published, or to get published again.

Selective arrogance does not mean thinking of yourself as any better than anyone else, or as having reached the pinnacle of your skills. Rather, it means treating every word you write as a precious baby worthy of the greatest care and nurturance. Here’s how to do that:

Never, ever throw anything away, period.

Carry with you at all times a means to record your creative thoughts.

Record your creative bursts, even if other voices inside you are dismissing them with negative judgments.

Trust your impulses and passions: if you feel drawn to write about something, write about it!

Eschew impatience-give your babies the time they need to gestate.

If you’ve read between the lines, you see that these instructions have you do nothing more than treat yourself and your writing with respect. However, because many people have a hard time doing even that, I counsel my clients to behave arrogantly. It gets them giggling and releasing the feelings they have about their writing, and makes it easier to find that respect.

Although you may have read elsewhere to be prepared to throw away your first writing attempts, to release attachment to your early work and the like, nuggets of wisdom and creativity appear throughout a writer’s life from childhood through seniority. I advocate collecting and these and treating them with care, perhaps polishing them now and again. There is no magical moment when one suddenly becomes “a good writer.” Thus, your most novice scribblings become diamond mines.

The one time I disobeyed my own advice and discarded what was I believed was possibly the most poorly written sentence in history (or at least my own history), I rejoiced. Five minutes later, I needed the gem in a new sentence, and struggled to reconstruct the one I’d discarded. May you never make that mistake-do as I say, not as I’ve done.

These gems also shine through at unexpected times. This is why I advise my clients to carry at least some scrap paper and a pencil nub if not an electronic recording device. The times at night and in the mornings between wake and sleep often yield good raw material, so keep your recording device of choice bedside.

The idea behind saving every little scrap, writing everything down and cultivating the arrogance to believe these activities matter is that finished pieces often assert themselves over time, forming a coherent whole from little scraps, like a Rorschach, or getting that crucial letter right in the Wheel of Fortune. The key is to keep feeding the collage and trusting that something or things will emerge over time.

Not every sentence will necessarily lead to an essay, book or screenplay of its own. But some might add that missing piece to make a good piece great. Even tidbits that go nowhere for now still give your brain a chance to exercise itself and keep your creative pathways well-hacked.

When it comes to choosing which pathway you’ll write your way down, trust your wild and wooly impulses. If you’re drawn to something, chances are you will make the subject come alive. You’ll seduce your readers by the very fact of your relationship to the material.

Finally, give your pieces the time they need to develop. Being an arrogant writer means honoring the gestation period your writings must pass through to be born into the world healthy and ready to engage readers. Honoring this gestation period may mean asking for help. Just as the dedicated gardener finds the right soil, fertilizer, seeds, watering schedule and equipment, so the arrogant writer finds her coach, buddy, copyeditor, ghostwriter, or colleague’s expert eye. I have seen writers move from stagnation to publication with the right combination of assistance. I love being part of that process.

    Giving Hebrew for the Holidays

    Thursday, December 25th, 2008

Its Chanukah Time! Have you figured out what youre going to give during each night of Chanukah? Maybe, youre just going to give a gift on the First and Eighth day of the Holiday, but even then, what are you going to give? WellWhy not Hebrew? Unfortunately, an amazing number of people studied Hebrew as a child, but over the years, they have let those Hebrew skills fall by the way side. Sometimes, as they become parents or enter their leisure years, the desire to learn Hebrew returns. In big cities, many of them take courses at the Jewish Community center, but in more remote places, many people turn to the computer to become their Hebrew teacher. At Home With Hebrew is perfect for beginners, but if you are very rusty in Hebrew, this is a great way to get re-acquainted with the language. This program introduces you to the basics of Hebrew grammar. It will give you a very strong foundation to go on with your Hebrew studies. “Hebrew Kindergarten”, despite the name, is not just for young children. It’s called Kinergarten, because it starts at the very beginning with the basics of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Recently, HebrewResources released its newest product “Shirei Ha-Shabbat (Songs of the Sabbath). This set includes a hip audio-CD with professionally sung music accompanied by guitar and band that covers many of the basic prayers. Then, the software program in the package teaches the more traditional synagogue tunes for the same Sabbath prayers. This package is a great way to get a person back into the Hebrew of the Siddur.
