How to Read Poker Tells

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

It’s completely obvious to you that one player has the nuts, for instance. And you watch, fascinated, as another player bets into the nut hand with NO outs. To compound the error, the player who is drawing dead now calls a raise on the river to lose even more money.

Before the winner is turned over, you mentally call the winning hand to yourself, and are not at all surprised when the two cards you expected to see are revealed.

Why are hands so easy to read when you’re NOT involved? Good question!

Why are they so hard to read when you have YOUR money in the pot? Another good question.

Poker is a game of mistakes. The player who makes the least misjudgments, misreads and downright DUMB plays is most likely to go home with the cash.

I’m going to give you an exercise that is quite advanced for a change. Every once in a while you should be given a chance to go to another level of play. If you are like most players (myself included), you won’t be able to complete this exercise for long. At best you’ll only be able to manage a few minutes of the exercise before failing.

Here is what I want you to do. One night next week, before you get out of the car in your cardroom parking lot and go in to play, I want you to stop for a few minutes and concentrate. I want you to visualize yourself as you sit behind the wheel. As you see yourself, pretend that you are a director in a movie where you are the star. The movie is about you. Now you are NOT the player, you are the director watching an actor playing you.

Are you still with me?

The person that is normally you, now is an actor playing you, ok?

For as long as you can maintain the exercise, watch yourself play poker from a camera angle just over your right shoulder. Within the picture frame, the camera can see all the players at the table and can zoom in on your hand when it is dealt to you.

Instead of you putting your money in the pot, you are watching an actor putting his chips in the pot. Now the camera follows everyone in turn around the table. From this detached point of view, suddenly everyone’s motives for acting are revealed. Including YOURS.

To your amazement, you will find yourself saying about the actor playing you. “Why did he do that? That was so STUPID! The guy in the three seat OBVIOUSLY has the best hand!”

Now as the director, you tell the actor that is playing you to throw the hand away. Of course, the actor does what he is told. The exercise is complete when the player in the three seat turns over EXACTLY the hand the detached, uninvolved you put him on.

You have now done what you couldn’t do before. You’ve played a hand as if you weren’t emotionally and financially involved. And you saved a lot of money.

Don’t expect to be able to maintain this exercise for long. It takes years of practice. But if you can do it even for a few hands a night, the difference in your play can be substantial. Poker will become a game of mistakes for the other players, not you.

Yoga: Simplify Your Life

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

The thought that life can be simple for many of us is a hope and a dream that we can’t afford to wait to happen. We have to make an effort towards it. And as many would agree, it starts with avoiding the pains, problems and frustrations of disease by changing to habits which result in good health. It is only in good health that life seems worth living anyway.

No matter how much we would want to rely upon outside influences, people, doctors or medicines, we all begin to realize, more than ever before, that we each have to do our part in building and maintaining our own health. This has to be done in spite of so many factors that are against us, such as environmental pollution, water problems, chemicals in food and many others.

Hygiene was once a very basic and important health measure to avoid contagion of every kind. That laxity that now exists throughout many medical institutes and hospitals and also out in the community is quite distressing and makes good community health even more difficult. But it remains first on the agenda of yogic disciplines.

Most of us realize that the simple life is usually the healthiest and that it is sensible to eat healthy fresh, natural food and to avoid the processed and refined commercial products, each of which usually contains chemicals and preservatives one would not choose to eat – that is, if we read the label! Anyway there is nothing as enjoyable as simple fresh food prepared in the home kitchen.

Exercise is a bit of a problem but we are generally fortunate to have access to health farms and fitness establishments that encourage exercise. Body building also encourages us to exercise, as well as the local walks and our yogic exercise disciplines. But we never seem to be able to do enough exercise as there never seems to be enough time. We must make time!

We know to breathe deeply to get enough oxygen for our body cells. But pollution of the atmosphere in the cities and suburbs makes it more difficult particularly for those who already suffer from asthma. So we have to practice yogic breathing exercises in the best possible outdoor situation we can manage as it is inadvisable to practice in air conditioned environments. Yoga teaching gives breathing deeply and gaining control of the breath top priority. It’s interesting to discover how much more control of the breath and how much more energy we seem to have after practicing for a few weeks.

We may have forgotten to consider the importance of an erect body posture when walking, sitting or at times of rest but through practicing the Yoga asanas one becomes very much more aware that the body can only function well if the vital organs are not under constant pressure. So we begin to stand tall.

So it seems for improved health and as a simple natural health insurance program, we should consider hygiene, fresh food diet, body posture, exercise and our breathing habits. To these well known factors, the yogic teaching adds an occasional fast, the addition of herbs as food supplements, some special body postures or asanas to improve health problems and the practice of relaxation.

But these relate to physical health measures to help us feel vital.

What about the psychological factors which will help us to feel happy?

In yoga classes we are taught how to relax our minds and bodies for two reasons. One is to become free of stresses and strains. The other is to enjoy a whole range of pleasant moods and feelings when we are quiet and there is nothing to do. We begin to be aware of other parts of our nature that have been neglected because of our constant activity.

Relaxing out on the floor isn’t as difficult as it sounds, in fact it becomes quite comfortable after getting used to being without mattress and pillow! When you lie there with your eyes closed instead of going to sleep as is tempting sometimes, you feel so calm and almost floating and it is so pleasant you seem to be all feeling instead of thinking – just by lying still! It’s much better than taking sedatives.

Meditation is a kind of relaxation for the mind but we have to sit upright to do this. Some people cant manage to sit cross legged, in fact not many are able to in a class, but classes have alternative positions and they can find one that’s suitable. Then we do the same thing, keeping still, shutting our eyes, breathing rhythmically and when we get tired of that just sit there a little longer and it feels really pleasant. You’ll even stop thinking about whether you left the gate open and other things that generally come into your mind. You may like to practice this at home.

Somehow when we are relaxed we begin to feel more content. Then we begin to think more clearly in deciding what we really want with our lives. Then we find we have the energy and vitality needed to go ahead and do it. In living fully, we realize that we are happy. It is simple!

Treating Arthritis- Naturally

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

There are actually three common types of arthritis. These are
Osteoarthritis which is the most common, affecting around 16
million Americans with an average age of 45. It usually will
attack weight bearing joints like knees, hips, and ankles but has
been found in the fingers, neck and spine. Each of our joints
is cushioned by cartilage, a very dense, sponge-like substance.
Osteoarthritis attacks that cartilage and gradually wears it
down.

Another type of arthritis is Rheumatoid Arthritis. Extremely
painful and inflammatory, it strikes the lining of the joints and
actually attacks two million Americans in their twenties.

Psoriatic Arthritis is not as well known as the previous two, but
actually eats away at the joints and can also manifest as
psoriasis on the skin.

The term Arthritis literally translates to “joint inflammation.”
If you suffer from any of the different types of Arthritis listed
above, chances are you have taken drugs to combat the effects or
tried other “home remedies.” If you haven’t yet tried
“Urtication,” it might be helpful. The term “Urtication” comes
from the botanical name, Urtica dioica and dates back some 2,000
years to biblical times. Urtica dioica is “Stinging Nettle. The
treatment is to grasp the nettles in a gloved hand and swat the
sore joints with the nettles. This may seem bizarre, but the
practice has proven to be so effective for some sufferers of
arthritis that they now maintain a nettle plant on their window
sill.

Here are a few more herbs that are used effectively for the
treatment of arthritis:

Black Cohosh

Also known as Black Snakeroot, Bugbane, Rattleroot, Rattleweed,
Squawroot. The dried root is the part used. This is a powerful
relaxant as well as being extremely effective with easing painful
menstrual cramps. Ovarian cramps will be relieved as well as
bringing on a delayed menstrual cycle. It is also effective in
the treatment of arthritis, osteo-arthritis, rheumatic pain and
neurological pan. In small doses, appetite and digestion are
greatly improved and is very beneficial for the nervous system in
general.

Bogbean

Useful for treatment of rheumatism, osteo-arthritis and
rheumatoid arthritis. Also has a stimulating effect on the
walls of the colon and digestive juices.

Celery Seeds

Use dried ripe fruits to use as an anti-inflammatory,
anti-rheumatic, diuretic or anti-spasmodic. Great for treating
rheumatism, arthritis and gout.

Chapparal

Very useful in cases of acne, arthritis, chronic backache, skin
conditions of warts and blotches. Also one of the best cancer
herbs.

Feverfew

Use the leaves to treat migraine headaches, arthritis, dizziness
and tinnitus.

Nettle

The is the herb we referred to earlier and is another one of
those “universal” plants. They are found all over the world and
they strengthen the entire body. Rheumatism, arthritis, eczema,
nosebleeds, arteries, lessen blood pressure are just a few
applications. Nettles contain calcium, chlorine, iron,
potassium, silicon, sodium and sulphur.

Saffron

A natural hydrochloric acid (utilizes sugar of fruits and oils),
thus helping arthritics get rid of the uric acid which holds the
calcium deposited in the joints. Also reduces lactic acid build
up. Good for measles, skin, scarlet fever and perspiration.

Yucca

Hope for arthritics. The extract from the plant has been used
with surprising success on arthritis and rheumatism sufferers.

All of the herbs mentioned here should be available at your local
health food store along with suggestions on how to prepare them
for use. Some applications will be to ingest in teas while
others may facilitate creating a topical treatment.

No matter what natural remedies you choose please consult your
physician to make certain that your course of treatment does not
interfere with medications that your doctor subscribes for your
treatment.

After Filing Bankruptcy: Qualifying for Credit and Loans

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

After filing bankruptcy, is it difficult to qualify for credit and loans?

While much will depend on your specific situation (credit score, income, age of bankruptcy, etc.), it doesn’t have to be as difficult as some people make it.

In After Bankruptcy Credit Solutions, I detail a three step process readers can use after filing bankruptcy to increase their chances of credit approval.

There’s not nearly enough room to cover each one in detail here, so I’ll summarize each step:

1) Increase your credit score

If you plan on applying for credit after filing bankruptcy, increasing your credit score is critical. Why? First, it can mean the difference between being approved or declined for a loan. Second, if you can increase your credit score enough after filing bankruptcy, you may be able to get a lower interest rate on any loans you qualify for – which could save you up to $100s or even $1,000s in interest.

What steps can be taken that could help increase your credit score after filing bankruptcy? There are a number of them. One step is to have any inaccurate negative information on your credit reports corrected. You also want to make sure any obsolete negative information is removed from your credit reports. As for other steps that could help increase your credit score after filing bankruptcy, I’ll save those for another article.

2) Know How the Credit Approval Process Works

Knowing how the credit approval process works is very important when applying for loan after filing bankruptcy. For example, what are the lender’s criteria? Do they have a minimum credit score criteria? What about income? How much of an impact will your bankruptcy have?

After filing bankruptcy, you want to know the answer to these questions before you apply for credit. Knowing the answers in advance can help you find the lenders that will consider your application. There are other questions you can ask, but this at least gives you a starting point.

3) Know How to Apply for Credit and Loans

There are specific strategies you can use when applying for credit and loans after filing bankruptcy. For example, if you plan on financing a car, there are strategies you can use to increase your chances of being approved for the loan – and possibly save money on interest charges, and even on the car itself.

Here’s another example: What if you want to buy a home after filing bankruptcy? Again, there are a number of strategies you can use to increase your chances of being approved – and potentially reducing the interest rate you pay. I go into detail on each one in After Bankruptcy Credit Solutions.

Qualifying for credit and loans after filing bankruptcy does not have to be as difficult as some people make it. In this article we looked at three steps you can take the next time you apply for credit and loans after bankruptcy to increase your chances of credit approval, and potentially reduce the interest
rate you end up paying in the process.

Shopping for the perfect briefcase

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

There are many factors that figure into buying a briefcase. Let’s take the features you’re searching for one at a time. If this is your first briefcase you need to look for something you’re comfortable with. If you’re an accountant or lawyer then carrying multiple files and papers is the norm. You’ll want something fairly large, with expandable capacity. Look for something that has a comfortable shoulder strap that you can manage easily. Accountants and lawyers tend to be pretty conservative so a black or brown case will surely work. Usually leather is the first choice, but there are many cases made of ballistic nylon with leather trim that are durable and have a professional look.

. Today, there are many companies making cases so that every price range is covered. Try the case on in front of a mirror. Try it with the shoulder strap if that is the way you will usually be carrying it. There are many new ergonomically correct shoulder straps on the market. They fit your shoulder and are more comfortable than the old style thinner strap. Briefcases last a long time so you want the case you purchase to be something you’ll enjoy for many years.

If you need a case that is smaller or larger than your old case be sure to bring the old case along to compare. Cases look different in a large store than they do at home. Some briefcases come with hidden expansion zippers to make the case larger or smaller.

If you are going to be carrying a laptop be sure you know the size. There are cases for 14″ to 17″ laptops. Many have removable padded inserts that are very useful if you travel. This way you can remove your laptop while going through security and keep it safe in the padded insert. Other laptop cases have a padded pocket inside where the laptop is protected. Many have very comfortable shoulder straps because these cases tend to get heavy. There are also molded briefcases called attaches designed to carry laptops. These do not usually have shoulder straps and are carried by one handle only. They generally have a combination lock so they are more secure. Some models are watertight
.
If you are looking for a lighter weight case, there is a large variety available. You no longer have to rule out leather. There’s also good quality nylon or ballistic nylon cases. Hold the cases side by side and lift them.

When you begin to develop shoulder problems or neck problems, or your doctor has advised you to stop lifting or carrying a briefcase, than the rolling case is for you. There are quite a variety of cases available now with wheels. They come in all sizes and models. Some have removable wheels. They are also available in leather or ballistic nylon. Purchase one with the good inline skate wheels, so they will roll smoothly over cement or walkways or down office halls.

Especially for woman, but also for men there are now a wide variety of styles and colors available. Woman can choose from petal pink to lipstick red to bright purple! For men there is every shade of brown imaginable as well as black. There are soft leathers, grained leathers, and combinations of leather and nylon. It’s always a good idea to have your initials monogrammed on the case so no one accidentally walks away with it.

Alberta’s David Thomson Explorer’s Trail and the Aurum Lodge- A Golden Nugget

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

AN ELECTRIFYING DRIVE

When someone mentions Alberta Canada, I automatically think of Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper.

I am not going to argue with you that the above three are not gorgeous, however, if you are looking for Alberta’s best kept secret, take a drive along the David Thompson Explorer’s Trail (Highway 11 on maps). You won’t be sorry, particularly if you are searching for that perfect and peaceful romantic venue.

Who was David Thompson anyways? He just happens to be one of Canada’s most important geographers, and it was he, who between the years 1806-08 traveled up the North Saskatchewan River and discovered the Athabasca Pass through the Continental Divide.

After experiencing the spectacular drive, we understood how appropriate it was to name the highway after this great Canadian. Incidentally, the route extends from Stettler to the Saskatchewan River Crossing at the junction of highway 93, within the boundaries of the Banff National Park.

The most electrifying part of the drive for my wife and myself was the one and a half hours from the town of Rocky Mountain House to our destination, the Aurum Lodge.

The sheer beauty and mystery of Crescent Falls, Bighorn Canyon, Abraham Lake and the surrounding dense forests was comparable to the reading of a brilliant piece of poetry. Our spirits were lifted to heights we could never have imagined!

If you have the time don’t forget to check out The Rocky Mountain Historic Site Of Canada.

A UNIQUE LOCATION IN NATURE AND WILDERNESS

The signature scene, and one I can still clearly visualize, is when we approached the Aurum Lodge nestled along Highway 11 overlooking the stunning beauty of Abraham Lake.

As an artist, my wife could not help herself from uttering every adjective in her English and French vocabularies in describing these majestic views! Adding to our excitement was that we were checking into a lodge whose location and surroundings possessed the perfect ingredients to enhance the aura of romance.

From the moment we walked into the lodge and settled into our spacious room, my wife and I were swept away with the matchless view of the turquoise color of Abraham Lake and the mountain surroundings of Mount Stelfox, Elliot Peak, and Mount. Michener.

Swiss born innkeepers Alan and Madeleine Ernst first made their way to Canada from Singapore in 1989, after having traveled and worked in over 40 countries. In 1999 they decided to make their home in Alberta in a location that is a half hour drive away from the nearest hamlet, Nordegg and adjacent to Banff National Park. In 2000′ their doors were opened to welcome the lodge’s first guests.

What is most unique and desirable about the all-season Aurum Lodge is that it is located in nature and wilderness that is readily accessible, as well as being rich in history and native culture.

The principal philosophy of its owners is that their actions are driven by environmental acceptability as much as profitability. As a result, they have taken into consideration the impact of the lodge on its surroundings, aesthetics, material choice, waste reduction, efficient lay-out, sound control, heat retention, climate control, passive solar, energy use, electricity production, pollution, waste management, transportation, and water supply and management.

Alan, a former Swiss banker and not, as I had imagined, an architect or engineer, did an amazing amount of research, and it was he who designed this eco-sensitive lodge.

Are the rooms romantic? You bet they are, when you consider their privacy, spaciousness, brightness, comfort, ambience, and yes, there is even a room with a Jacuzzi for that special occasion.

For comfort, all of the lodge’s scrupulously cozy clean six rooms come with orthopedic health mattresses, down duvets and pillows (synthetic bedding is available on request), private baths with tub/shower.

There are also two housekeeping cottages as well as a two- bedroom apartment that comes complete with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and bathroom with shower. These units are separate from the lodge and have no access to the facilities of the lodge (e.g. common areas or meals and no maid service).

We could not help but feel the spirit of the Rockies carrying through all of the rooms as well as the lodge’s surroundings. By the way, if you are wondering what the name Aurum means, Alan reminded me that it is the Latin term for gold. The lodge’s owners firmly believe that there are values in life, which cannot be measured in monetary terms but are equally precious.
One of the nicest compliments the owners received was from a middle aged couple who came here to unwind and left with the comment that their stay had been special because it was the first time in years, they had a chance to sit, relax and talk, without being disturbed by phones, kids, friends or TV. That just about sums up what the Aurum Lodge is all about!

DINING

Any doubts we may have had pertaining to breakfast or the evening “table d’hte” were quickly dispelled when we devoured every morsel of Madeleine’s deliciously prepared meals. Both were hearty, tasty and wholesome. In addition, the hosts were generous in offering at dinner complimentary wine and beer-something not too common among inns of a similar nature.
Breakfast is included with the lodge rooms only and dinner is available by advance notice for guests in the lodge.
The dining ritual included meeting with guests from all corners of the globe resulting in some very animated discussions-one more reason why our stay was so delightful.

Undeniably the Aurum Lodge is a golden nugget find!

Revealed Bass Fishing Secrets

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Why is it that so many fishermen are so secretive? Whether they’re bass fisherman, fly fisherman, or trout fisherman, it’s always the same, they’re just keeping all the secrets between them and they’re friends. They very rarely reveal any of their little dirty fishing secrets to anyone else. For years, I was literally out on my little aluminum boat probably developing skin cancer from being out on the lake so long and not catching anything except one fish if I were lucky.

Fishing isn’t easy! At least that’s what I thought during all my fishing trips the past ten or so years. Only recently did I discover I was doing just about everything wrong. About a year ago I came across a fellow who knew just about every bass fishing secret there was in the book. He was a true pro to bass fishing.

I met this fellow while cruising around my favorite fishing lake in Florida. We noticed each other when we saw we had almost identical Alumacraft boats. We had the same red stripe on the side and everything. What a day it was. It was a day which took my little fishing hobby to a whole new level.

Besides trading stories about our little boats, we talked about bass fishing, and how the lake we were on was easy to fish on. There are bass fish just about everywhere in this lake. Shockingly, he told me that the lake we were on had only small amounts of large bass. He only fished here for catching and releasing fish when he wasn’t out competing in and winning fishing tournaments. I was in shock. I didn’t even want to believe what he was saying! Was I really fishing in the darn lake catching small fish? I thought a five pound bass was a great size for dinner for me and my wife! Okay, so he was only joking. He then told me that during this specific time of day was when there were only smaller fish out and about. The bigger fish come out when… oh, wait it’s a secret!

Anyway, meeting this pro was a life changing event. For the wrest of the day on the lake he revealed secret after secret to me. This guy happened to have just about every type of fishing lure you could imagine. I had quiet a collection myself. The weird thing was that he only used about three types of lures, in only a few different colors. These were specifically for bass fishing. This guy really had it down. He had been catching so many fish in his free time he already had found his own secret lures that were guaranteed to catch a bass. These were lures you could buy at any fishing shop, nothing that wasn’t available to the public.

There’s now secret guide to Bass Fishing out. Most of the pro’s don’t know about it yet, and the pro’s who have discovered it literally want it gotten rid of! It literally gives away the secrets these pro’s use during tournaments to catch their record breaking catches. These are the same secrets my friend told me. In fact, this guide reveals so much more!

Aaron Brandon’s hobby was catching one lousy Bass in a single day until he learned all the secrets only the pro fisherman knew about! Several of the secrets are now revealed in this secret bass fishing guide located at http://www.revealed-secrets.com/BassFishing.html.
